First we had letters. We had “penfriends” from alla around the world. We loved some girl from Canada, had a boyfriend in Japan.
Then, there came internet. We embraced it with a huge hug. The main target of the internet was just for knowledge. Literatures. On-line encyclopedias. And at that point, we saw the first signs of the term “user oriented”. Usera all around the world were happy for the knowledge, but asked for more. And “more” means “people” here. So, e-mails, irc, chats, aol came up with a flash, but step by step. The main onjective was transforming into meeting new gals. Remember the movie “You’ve got mail?”
After this chat generation started to take over the world, some friends from Finland, States and Japan collaborated their forces on another area, mobile phones.
Mobile phone generation started, cameras, mms, bluetooth, chat sms, etc. Suddenly it became the new hype. Which phone you have? What can you do with that? Speak to me as much as your megapixels!
Then again, it was internet’s turn and it did a massive moves by a little chat program called MSN, two major sites called “MySpace” and “Facebook”. And of course, YouTube.
This was seemed to be another chatting platform. But then again, a new term stepped into our lives by the power of “open source”. Its called; “User Generated”.
Now users became the media itself. Facebook became the big brother, followed by MySpace. It was seemed to be going well, and we said that this must be “Web 2.0″. -Because it was fun and sci-fi to name something with numbers. Remembered T-800? Got it?-
Meanwhile, mobile companies and GSM operators were pushing their boundries to catch an attention, but it wasn’t powerful enough, until…some guy from silicon valley decided to sell phones and a new era started by the time iPhone got on sale.
“App” term joined our vocabulary. It was still a mobile yes, but it has WiFi. This dynamics changed the route and other companies started pouring products like Android, Pre, Touch, 97, etc.
At the same time, a blue bird came to life and sstarted tweeting louder and louder day by day. And in a very short period, it became nearly the biggest platform of internet after Facebook. Followed by Friendfeed, digg, etc. Another new terms came to life, like “social media”, “social media experts”, “internet guru” and “evangelist”.
Internet was a big home which has everything you probably need. And it was welcoming you in. But it became an empty area, where you, me, us build a home brick by brick. And it became more fascinating than ever.
YouTube was the first who recognized this and made available for mobile users to upload their videos. Followed by some photo sharing sites and other video sharing sites.
Nowadays, you can post your tweets ffrom your phone by sms. And other social networks are in and on the way too.
The result is; ı want to make a prediction. I believe in 2010, we’re gonna have our GSM social network. They are trying to create but all of them have issues, like you have to download the app, but it doesn’t have a push data. Or you can sen mms or sms, but you have to login again and again. Not so “user friendly”.
I wonder who’s gonna be the first that will combine all social networks on a mobile platform. I insist on mobile because now its their turn. And seems like social media on the internet is coming to a need to refresh.
